On the "Culture War"

Jonah Goldberg is becoming my favorite editorial columnist. This piece is dead on the money:

It’s the Liberals Who are Driving the Culture War

The popular perception among some is that evangelicals and conservatives are on some kind of witchhunt against what they perceive to be the forces of darkness, that it is we who are leading some charge to rid the culture of infidels. Goldberg rightly insists that what we have known all along is the truth, the exact opposite of liberal perceptions: it is the militant secular left which is on the attack, and it will give no quarter in its war to demand its version of the “truth” prevail. A good read well worth your time.

I love that he clarifies the liberal left’s proclamation that “any victory for pro-choice is a victory for women”, as half of all women are pro-life!

Maybe they feel that a woman who is pro-life doesn’t count. After all she’s [obviously] so very unenlightened.

I agree, this has really become a fiasco and they are charging on what they think is a white horse.

I think this is one of those things where perspective makes all the difference. Yes the left sometimes drives the culture war. But so does the Right. And neither side likes to admit that they keep that fire burning. And like all wars there are no knights in shinning armor. Just infinitely fallible people duking it out. Both sides are guilty.

For example, only 24% of Americans want abortion to be illegal in all cases, yet state legislature after state legislature keeps putting up bills effectively making all abortions illegal. Mississippi just had a ballot measure to that effect (defeated 60/40), and in the immediate aftermath of what appears to be a crushing defeat in the most conservative state in the Union, the right-wingers push on (from the Greenberg Int’l Business Times): “The group [who were behind the unsuccessful campaign in Mississippi] is also trying to put referendums on 2012 ballots in Florida, Montana, Ohio, Oregon, Nevada and California. [Keith] Mason also said that the group plans to pursue “life-at-fertilization” legislation in 2012 in Alabama, Wisconsin and Michigan.”

What do you call that course of action? In my book it’s ideological foolishness born out of the utopian belief that making something illegal will stop it from happening.
