Pittsburgh’s going to the Super Bowl, here we go…

steelers-logoI must remark upon the mighty Pittsburgh Steelers, and their achievement yesterday of qualifying for their seventh Super Bowl, with a strong likelihood that they will, two weeks hence, lay claim to their unprecedented sixth Super Bowl victory. Their 23-14 victory over the Ravens wasn’t as close as the score would indicate; they thoroughly dominated the Ravens all evening, as predictably their ravaging defense rattled the much-praised Ravens’ rookie QB Joe Flacco, forcing him into three costly interceptions. Would have been even more lopsided had their high-priced rookie WR Limas Sweed not dropped an easily-catchable TD pass, or failing that, had the coaching staff not pooted away three points with a dumb end-of-half move, or even if the offensive coordinator had decided, say early in the third quarter, that a series of one-and-a-half yard runs by Willie Parker wasn’t likely to soften up the Ravens’ formidable defense, and instead thrown and thrown with the clutch Ben Roethlisberger at the controls.

No matter; the Steelers advance to Tampa to play the Arizona Cardinals, who look every bit the team of destiny, yet who are about to find out that destiny often only gets you so far (see: Tampa Bay Rays). I congratulate the Cardinals on a great season, and pity them the brutal pounding they will endure in a couple weeks. The early Vegas line is Steelers giving 6 1/2 points; though I’m not a betting man, if I were, I’d take Pittsburgh and lay the points and not think twice about it.

Super Bowl prediction: Steelers 38, Cardinals 14

I’m afraid that after a few recent competitive Super Bowls, this is going to be another SF-Denver/Baltimore-NYG one. Steelers in a landslide.
