Is Greg Maddux the Greatest Pitcher of My Lifetime?

It says here that he is. You can have Roger Clemens and his steroid-hyped fastball. Nolan Ryan was a class act, and an overpowering pitcher, as is Randy Johnson. I caught Bob Gibson’s final years, and a more intimidating pitcher I’ve never seen. But all of that said, I think Maddux is the best.

Gene Wojciechowski seems to agree. If you’re a baseball fan, you need to read his tribute.

You certainly can make a case for people like Clemens or Johnson, but as the link to the ESPN articles says, he just wasn’t like them or the stereotype of successful pitchers. I think that’s what makes him the greatest picther I’ve ever seen. He did it his way with hard work and a humble (albeit fiery) attitude. You can’t help but admire a guy like that.

Yeah, in a day of egoistic jocks, Maddux is a real breath of fresh air.
