Woody Allen and the $700 Billion Bailout

Should the government bail out these financial buffoons and bumblers to the tune of $700 billion? To answer that question, let us consult the wisdom of Woody Allen, for his viewpoint on life would seem to be pretty spot-on with regard to the quandary before us. Allen said,

“Life is divided into the horrible and the miserable…”

That would seem to be the choice before us: it’s an utterly terrible, miserable, ridiculous thing to have our government fix the problems of these companies (problems that I blame our federal government for creating in the first place, in significant measure, by tinkering with the market so many times, and in so many ways, in the name of some liberal do-good/feel-good stupid plan, that the market has responded to these things instead of sound market principles. Not that the companies themselves don’t bear their share of the blame, of course.). The problem is that not doing this may have longer-term negative repercussions. It’s like another Woody Allen quote:

“More than any other time in history, mankind faces a crossroads. One path leads to despair and utter hopelessness. The other, to total extinction. Let us pray we have the wisdom to choose correctly.”

It’s hard not to be pessimistic and cynical about our country when we are governed so poorly at a federal level. For my part, I’m not voting for any incumbents, not my Democrat U.S. Representative, nor my Republican U.S. Senator. Both will waltz to re-election; I’m not sure there are more than a handful of incumbents that deserve re-election, but the fact is that the American people are sheep, and we’ll put this same crop of losers back in to further their work of running us in the ground…
