You won’t hear Planned Parenthood saying this, and don’t look for it from the lips of the femiNazis over at N.O.W., but America is a pro-life nation, and the idea that most Americans want to “protect a woman’s right to choose” to murder her unborn baby is a lie. And this isn’t from some pro-life organization; no, via Time magazine, the results of a poll done by the Alan Guttmacher Institute indicate that 55% of Americans want to make the vast majority of abortions (96%) to become illegal, these being “elective” abortions, whereas 42% believe that a woman should be allowed to legally abort a baby if it inconveniences her life in any way. Yes, in cases such as incest, rape, or danger to the life of the mother, most Americans would like abortion to remain legal. While I don’t support abortion in cases of rape and incest, would I take legislation that reflected the beliefs of Americans, and thus spare 96 out of every 100 babies upon which abortion is committed today?

In a heartbeat…

  1. Safe, Legal, and RARE – just as Bill Clinton said. It was accurate in 1992 and is still accurate now.

Not quite, Ex, from my read of the evidence. It would seem that these poll results say, “Safe, 24 times LESS legal, and 24 times MORE rare.” That’s hardly the Bill Clinton stance.

By the way, maybe you can think of an answer, but I can’t: what did Bill Clinton do in his eight years to try to make abortion “rare”?

  3. Only this.

Abortions have dropped from a high in 1990 (and continue to drop) due to the increased awareness of contraception among women. Clinton wisely allowed the Department of Education to give money to schools without requiring them to teach the utterly ridiculous “abstinence-only” education.

I think your explanation is a bit too neat, Ex. It’s hard to say how many different factors play into the statistics, though your idea may well be a good part of it.

And as to “abstinence-only” education being ridiculous, that’s your opinion. It’s my opinion that when we educate our children that they are animals, unable to control their appetites, they act like it; that teaching that sex can be “safe” because a condom is used is “utterly ridiculous”; and that public schools teaching “safe sex” while failing (for the most part, pockets of excellence excluded) to educate our children is a significant reason why so many families have fled the public schools over the course of the past 30+ years.

But all of this digresses from the main point, which is that this poll demonstrates that most Americans want abortion to be much, much more rare than it currently is, restricting it to instances of the mother’s life, rape, and incest (a position that Bill Clinton most certainly did not support).

I’m afraid I’m one of what Neal Boortz disdainfully labels the wacko right as being a “turbo fundie”, a high power fundamentalist who thinks the earth is only 6000 years old and would deny a woman the right to control her body. Not only that, I’m a bright red turbo fundie. p.s., a baby inside her body is not her body, it’s her responsibility.

I watched Silent Scream on YouTube. Does rape or incest make it ok to pull a child’s limbs off?

I propose that to reduce abortions, the abortion procedures be included in Biology class and sex education. “Children, this is one consequence of random sex.” Abortions will decrease.

Also, instead of this endless tug of war over condoms vs. abstinence, let’s try both. Give them the success and failure rates of pregnancy and/or STDs using a condom and compare those statistics to abstinence, a procedure that is successful in preventing STDs, pregnancy, and the choice to abort or not every single time it’s tried.

If we allow our children to indulge in their feelings and urges, that’s exactly what they’ll do. If we treat them like the highest order of thinking mammals that they can be, we’ll see a dramatic reduction in animal behavior and a respectable rise in good decision making.
